The buzz on SK-II

The other day, i was invited for a skincare consultation at the SK-II booth at Isetan, KLCC.

First off, the brand SK-II always seemed like a “premium” brand to me, catering to older women and tai-tai’s who can afford to indulge in expensive products. So i presumed the brand to be more suited to these women only, focusing more on anti-aging products, etc. Ie. not so relevant to us younger crowd.
But here and there, I’ve also heard of this coveted “miracle water”, but also never really investigated further.

So i thought, hey, this is a great opportunity to find out what the buzz on SK-II is all about
And maybe share some wisdom with my readers whom if, like me, perceives the brand the same way.

And hey, if their products can make me look like their stunning ethereal-looking ambassadors, I’m all ears.

Going for these consultations can be quite a bittersweet experience for me. The good parts being, sure I’d learn more about the skin (and all that inhibits it) and proper skincare regimes,
(and of course, there’d be samples and freebies most of the time )
The bad part is, they’ll highlight to me what’s wrong with my skin. On the outside it may look good, but god knows what’s going on underneath… baaah maybe i don’t wanna know. Ignorance is bliss in this case!

But i suppose it’s kinda like going for a doctor’s checkup, even though you’re not sick. Scary, but necessary.

Jen, my consultant, starts off the session by asking about my current skincare regime, products I’m currently using, common problems i face, if any.

In a nutshell, I’m pretty happy with my overall situation, although my skin is of course not utter perfection. To go along with my lazy, low-maintenance skincare regime - cleanse, tone, moisturize.
I have combination skin, which is sometimes prone to oil and minor breakouts, which is annoying, but manageable. So i stated that as a problem, mm hmmn.

My skin is not sensitive or allergic to anything, and this is why I’m not fussy with any specific products or brands. Meaning, i have the freedom to pick and choose and change, as i like!
This is why when my readers ask me what brands am i currently using, my answer differs from time to time Lucky me, i guess :)

Upon first look, Jen asked me this straight out. “Do you double-cleanse your face?”

dang, she got me spot on.

“Hehe… yes i do, but okay not all the time. Some nights i get too tired or lazy…heh.”
*sheepish grin*

One thing Jen said to me, which really made me sit up and listen.

“If you don’t double-cleanse your face properly, the oil, sebum, and even your make-up gets stuck in your pores. People spend so much money on expensive creams and moisturizers but find that they don’t work so effectively. This is because your skin is clogged, and cannot absorb the nutrients properly!”

hoh.
Most of us have pretty much been wasting our money so far, not because the products don’t work, but because we have clogged, unabsorbing pores!
I hope you girls are listening up, because this is a major tip! Well, to me at least.

She took a couple of tests to see what’s going on underneath my skin.
The last test was the scariest, in layman’s terms, a result of “SPQ 3″ means my skin is youthful,
“SPQ 2″ means im 20+ years old with the skin of a 30 year old,
and a “SPQ 1″ means im 20+ years old with 40 year old skin FML

“Erhh. Can i please not take this test? hehh” *nervous laughter*

Omg if i find out i have 40 year old skin i will go home and cry ok.

The other girls saw this and laughed, encouraging me to just take the test! sure laa encourage me now, then later laugh at me if i have SPQ 1 right -_-

damn. 7. scared.

In the end, the analysis showed “SPQ 3″. Which basically means, i am 20+ years old with baby butt smooth skin haha. Sweet!

Happy days! If i have 40 year old skin, i wouldn’t be smiling right.

Next, she told me about the products, including the Facial Treatment Essence, ie. “miracle water”

The fascinating story behind this miracle and essentially, SK-II, is that when a group of scientists visited a sake brewery in Japan, they noticed the elderly workers with old wrinkled faces, but with extraordinarily soft and youthful hands. The scientists spent years researching what was causing this miracle. Realizing that those hands were in constant contact with the sake fermentation process, they finally isolated the miracle ingredient Pitera®, a naturally-occurring liquid from the yeast fermentation process.

This is pretty much their star product. Whilst all SK-II products have Pitera® in them, their Facial Treatment Essence contains 99% of concentrated Pitera®
Research shows that long-term use of this will have your skin looking naturally clearer and more translucent. Consistent with the story of those sake brewery workers!

So you can imagine how pleased i was to get a free sample of that miracle stuff. A full bottle of 150ml will set you back over RM300 bucks. Yeouch. But hey, the price you pay for miracle-workers, right?

But of course, if i see any miraculous short-term differences within my tiny sample bottle of 30ml, I’ll be sure to let you know
