Nuffnang Tour around SG
(Part 2)
(continued from Nuffnang Blog Awards @ Singapore)
One last random picture from the night,

I find this pic so bodoh
Back at the hotel after the awards, i can’t remember what i was doing or god forbid why the heck was i standing like that. Super aunty styleee. Chapalang white plastic bag adds to the ambience. Scolding David for making a mess or something, but i really wasn’t!
The next day, we went on a little tour around Singapore organized by Nuffnang Singapore.
I especially loved this tour because it was so- touristy! It’s always fun to visit a country’s tourist attractions and acting damn, well, touristy.
Moving around in large crowds. Making damn alot of jakun ooh~ and aah~ noises. Taking pictures of everything you see. Visit museums and zoos and all the places locals wouldn’t quite bother going to.

Omaagaaad, so early in the morning

Morning faces!
Waking up at 7am ’cause the bus leaves at 8am, gotta admit it was a tad early. But we had a long eventful day ahead!

Singapore Flyer
Ok at the risk of sounding like a complete bimb, i always thought these ferris wheels only seat 2-4 people in each ‘capsule’. You know, like the typical themepark ferris wheels you see on TV!
So i was a little taken aback when i walked closer and saw that it was a HUGE and ENCLOSED capsule, air-conditioned and even UV-protected, can fit about 20 people comfortably in there?
*shy* Jakun alert
Oh shuttup, im sure some of you didn’t know that either. (please say yes)

Onboard the capsule, the tour guide telling us a bit more about the city

This is the only head-to-toe picture i have, so here’s a little what-i-wore-today bit.
Navy polka top: Bangkok
Denim hi-waist skirt: An Old Flame
Bag: Warehouse
Shoes: Rubi

The view from above

Next up was a visit to the Royal Selangor Pewter Museum

And at the end of the tour, we all got to make our own pewter bowls at the workshop :) Fun!
Reminds me of Kemahiran Hidup class (Living Skills) back in primary school days
the fun parts, at least.
I always loved the woodwork and electronic activities, but of course my mother wanted me to be a girl so she took my hammer away and put me into cooking and rumahtangga classes. Blaaargh.
I quite hated my KH teacher. She never forgave me ever since she gave us assignments to cook an egg in class, i cracked open an egg into a frying pan and stared at it. She walked by and yelled, “YOU FORGOT TO PUT OIL IN THE PAN FIRST!!!”

But i redeemed myself later and got out of her black books in subsequent sewing classes because i always got top marks. Heh heh heh.
Wahh i miss my old school days!! *reminisces and strays way off topic*

So the workshop began with the guide giving us instructions, while we examined our tools and materials.
The first step was to engrave / imprint words onto our flat pewter plates.
I distinctively remembered the instructor said to tap the hammer lightly a few times, but the entire room went into a frenzy of banging and pounding their hammers like there’s no tomorrow

The engraving seemed like a delicate procedure to me, so i merely tap-tap-tapped.
I soon got the rhythm and kept on going. The couple next to us (didn’t get your names, sorry!) later compared our work with theirs. “…Ok don’t lie. You’ve worked here before, right! If not why is your work is so nice and halus!”
tap-tap-tap?

The next step was really to finally to pound our hammers like there’s no tomorrow, shaping our pewter plates into rounded bowls.
Another frenzy of banging and pounding filled the room.
I had difficulty shaping mine properly, eventhough i whacked with my hammer til my palms went red
Instead of achieving a nice smooth curve, it ended up denty and wonky-looking.
“See, i obviously dont work here because i suck at this part!” *whack whack whack*
David took my sad excuse of a bowl and pounded expertly with a rhythm. And it turned out perfect
What a great team we make, for making pewter bowls.

his work

Now coincidentally, the FleaFlyFloFun flea market was happening on that exact same day
which i kinda hinted heavily that i had to go for, in my earlier post Uniquely Singapore itinerary post.

at HOME Club
I damn well love fashion bazaars and flea markets. It’s not uncommon to find me running around our local weekend bazaars digging for treasures, so this being my first time at Singapore’s bazaar, was certainly a treat for me :)

Caught standing in fourth position, lol
I don’t know why, but yes i do tend to stand that way without realizing it
And if you look closer, you can see my flipflop tan lines i got from Langkawi. Bleughh!

Bumped into Ed of Lahlahland. in SG, of all places!

Going inside HOME Club

*tired*
Sat down for a bit to recuperate from the shopping fatigue. And also go over all my purchases!
Overall, if i had to compare, I’d have to say SG bazaars trumps most M’sian bazaars.
Keyword: most. Bearing in mind that I’ve been to a lot of Malaysian bazaars; the good ones, and also a whole lot of bad ones.
And of course, bearing in mind that this was my first time at any S’porean bazaar, FFFFun was a good experience and a great first impression on me :) there’s a lot of interesting things and fresher designs here that i never saw in Malaysia!
Whereas in Malaysia, things tend to get pretty repetitive sometimes. IMHO of course.

We were scheduled to rejoin the Nuffnang tour at 5pm, so we had a few moments to spare.
So hand-in-hand, we walked to nowhere, talking about nothing and everything and enjoying the sights :)

We passed by a cafe with this cartoon illustration that caught my eye. Sokiut!
A waitress saw us laughing at the picture poking at the glass door (my god she must’ve thought we were the most jakun people ever -_-”) and she invited us in, and we took a peek through the doors. Whoa.

We stepped into Settlers Cafe
It’s a chillout cafe with a comfy homey feel to it, which houses an entire library of board games.
I can’t remember the exact number of games they have, the waitress told us but I’ve forgotten the ridiculous number. Dunno how many hundreds, and still growing!
Some even imported from Europe and US, difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere.
When i studied their extensive collection, i could barely even spot a board game i was familiar with
“…ah! Taboo, my favourite. …ah, Cluedo! ……wow i think that’s all i know.”
Sorry la, im a bit of a geek sometimes,
i love board games!
Must come back here the next time I’m in Singapore with friends. Hee.

The menu
Last but certainly not least, the MINT Museum of Toys
Of all the interesting things we saw and places we visited today, Mint Museum was definitely one of my favourites.
Just like the name suggests, it’s a museum (or more accurately a 5-storey contemporary building) that houses over 50,000 pieces of old-school vintage toys, some dating all the way back to the mid-19th century.

Tintin collection on the left
Off the top of my head, there were childhood characters like Tintin, Mickey, Batman, Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Bonzo, Flinstone, Astroboy, to name a few.
I felt like a little kid visiting the toy store for the very first time. Literally!
Completely fascinated by the massive display of vintage toys, collectibles and rare one-of-a-kinds; and bewildered that such a place even exists at all! Omg the nostalgia!
But none of the toys in this place were for sale, of course. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any price tags.

The tour guide took us through the 5 floors, stopping at the displays to tell us detailed stories and the history of the toys. Best education I’ve had yet.
Like how toys that came with their original box would have increased their value by 50-60%.
Or how the name ‘Teddy’ was given to all teddy bears.
And a superhero TV show ‘The Green Hornet‘, Bruce Lee starred as the butler??
seriously, best education EVER!

Bruce Lee as “Kato, the Green Hornet’s Asian manservant”, as Wikipedia puts it so bluntly

More Popeye collections

Sweet cigarettes that was banned shortly after production

Old-school Mickey!

Peter Rabbit

Spot the small box of ‘Darkie’ toothpaste, before they changed it to ‘Darlie’ as widely used today.

So salah

Bonzo the dog.
Old pictures and sketches depicted him as quite a pompous character - He loved to drink, gamble, and womanize.

The Beatles

A rare Chinese doll, given to the owner of the museum shortly before the doll-maker’s death

More old school childhood memorabilia
Ok, it’s turning 3am soon, and I’m freakin’ tired. And feeling really nostalgic right about now
I’ll leave you with the last pictures of the bar on the highest floor, decorated with the coolest vintage enamel signs on the walls.

I’ve always seen Heineken brand as green. I wonder, was it ever RED in the past?

Goodnight!

i think s’porean fashion markets should be better than ours too. they are more fashion forward than us, plus you always see the same few vendors at our local bazaars! and the stuff, you’re right, repetitive. Thx for the writeup on FFFFun, i want to try to attend the next one now. do you know when is it? or any other s’porean markets?
