I find that at certain points in life, your little sister stops being, well, your little sister.

When she does or says something that completely throws you offguard; til you can’t help but notice the maturity you never expected in your forever-younger, forever-naive, baby sis.

One night, I came across this piece she wrote,
not only did I relate to it, but I baffled at the way she discovered the contradictory correlation between the two songs. Two songs I never paid much attention to earlier, but now, makes all the sense in the world.
(debbie, since when did you become so clever?)

You and I are like oil and water
And we’ve been trying, trying trying
Ohhhh, to mix it up.
We’ve been dancing on a volcano
And we’ve been crying, crying, crying
Over blackened souls.

Babe, this wouldn’t be the first time,
it will not be the last time.
There is no parasol that would shelter this weather.

I been smiling with anchors on my shoulders
But I’ve been dying, dying, dying
Ohh, Ohh, Oh to let them go.

Babe, this wouldn’t be the first time,
it will not be the last time.
There is no parasol that would shelter this weather.
Babe, this wouldn’t be the first time,
it will not be the last time.
We were trying to believe that everything would get better.

We’ve been lying to each other
Hey! Babe! Let’s just call it what it is!
Oil and Water!
Oil and Water!
Oil and Water!

If it’s good to complicate then both of us are doing fine.
Just keep your eyes on your part and leave me alone to mine.
If it’s good to instigate, we’re a fast horse, bet on us.
I’m not calling you an animal;I think we just fight too much.

Hey now, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine,
Even diamonds start as coal.

We’re both aligned in frame of mind
But circumstance got us good.
And now you’re seeing a side of me
I wish no one ever would.
Yeah, if it’s right to pick a fight, we’re
Fingers in a sugar bowl.
Love isn’t perfect, even diamonds start as coal.

Come on, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine,
Even diamonds start as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete and infantine
Even diamonds start as coal.

Give it time girl, the fire feels divine
The sweetest things, they burn before they shine.
We think way too much,
Look at us losing touch!
A promise is a promise until…

Yeah in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine,
Even diamonds start as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete and infantine
Even diamonds start as coal.

I never noticed it before until now, but wow do Incubus make such great music or what? After years of listening to Light Grenades, I noticed how beautiful Incubus’s lyrics can be, but what I never noticed before until now was.. well, the placement of these 2 songs.

They’re placed one after another. back-to-back.

I dunno la, maybe Incubus didnt place the 2 contradictory songs back to back on purpose, maybe they did, but what I personally think of this coincidence is that its pretty genius.. and beautiful.

… I just hate how its possible for us to feel like both songs at once.

And I’m sure that, when she wrote this, she didn’t think she’d be giving some hope to a lost soul who happen to stumble across her post one accidental night.

Currently listening to: both songs

the songs really dont feel like the incubus that i grew to love. their new stuff doesnt do anything for me. d:

make yourself is still their best album imo. brandon’s writing is still amazing though. just their music doesnt have the same feeling anymore.

    Love Incubus.

    Always have.

I think I was 12 when I first heard them.

God do I feel old now.

Even more old esp since Mj died and took a part of my childhood with him.

henwei: I suppose all bands will alter their music style even a little bit throughout the years. Keeping their sound fresh and whatnot. But definitely, the genius writing will remain genius :)

devil undercover: Sigh. Must suck to have him die when you grew up to him :( MJ’s music was legendary. Unfortunately, i didnt grow up to MJ, i grew up to BS. (britney spears)

O girly, have you made me feel old or what! LOL.

Oh well. Mj’s best yrs were the 1980s & 1990s. I was 4 when I first saw ‘Bad’.

Ok now I made myself feel REALLY old. *sigh* :)

BS was the BS alright back then. I couldn’t stand her! No okla, feel bad for her and she’s not as annoying as she used to be.
