New Year Resolutions?
I don’t quite believe in the concept of NY resolutions, because I feel that the 12-month period is too long for anyone (who takes it seriously) to properly review their own performance, and keep themselves in check.
More often than not, by June we would have forgotten about it or slacked off so much that we’d just stop giving a damn. Thinking, “Ok this will be next year’s resolutions, and I’ll be more serious then, I promise!” Yeah right.
NY resolutions is a form of self-improvement. The idea of it is noble, but perhaps a little tweaking is needed for it to be effective?
I’ve decided to try this little experiment on myself this year.
Monthly resolutions, or monthly personal goals.
To be honest, I did draw up a long healthy set of New Year resolutions, but now I think I’ll break it down to shorter-term goals, in order to achieve my long-term ones, and review it every month end. I’ll probably think of new goals along the way, then I’ll insert them into next month’s resolutions! Slow and steady wins the race, baby.
Here goes nothing!
(’xcuse the morning face. and morning hair. and, ngehh.)
Personal goals of January 2009.
1. Borrowing this from Derlyn, I do have a short fuse and a long list of pet peeves. This year, I will make a conscious effort to be more patient. So it’s not like I scream at people with annoyance or anything, but I now know that while my laughter and smiles are contagious, so are my sour faces and mood shifts.
2. Related with (1) above, I will be more patient, and learn to listen more than I talk. Even when I feel I’m right in an argument, I should learn to listen to what the other person’s got to say.
3. I care too much. I’m not stating this to toot my own horn, because trust me, it’s not a good thing. I often find myself caring even for the wrong people, and trusting anyone and everyone who want my friendship, or “seem” like they want it. Until I personally witnessed the ugly side of people; all the pretentiousness and hidden agendas. It’s funny how I knew all this but I chose not to believe it, yeah benefit of the doubt and all that crap.
This year, or perhaps from now onwards, I’m going to be a bit more selective with who I choose to keep close to me. Sure, I’ll still be nice and polite all around, but I’ll be careful. Because once they’re in my circle, I will go all out to care for them.
I have learnt that there are people I just don’t need. And I shouldn’t have to “wait” til they’ve wronged me in order to filter out these unnecessary individuals from my life.
Keep the important ones and be happy
it’s not about quantity, but quality.
4. I am a hopelessly undomesticated woman of modern society, but not all hope is lost. This year I WILL LEARN TO COOK! Borrowing an old NY resolution from someone I used to know, I will learn to cook up at least one meal per month. Doesn’t matter if it’s a small sandwich or a big hoo-ha complicated gourmet dish, that’s one meal per month, Cynthia.
So there! I have a longer list of NY resolutions, but I think I will work on these 4 first. Slow and steady wins the race :)
