Breaking into Song and Dance
A few good movies I’ve watched lately, and I want to review on!
They’re musicals, to be precise. Because I love them, and I rarely ever write a full post about a movie unless it’s *that* good,
or it sucked so bad, I feel like I have a public duty to warn people not to watch it.
Across The Universe is a story about life and love in the turbulent 60′s!
From it’s early innocent years, to its hippy trippy drug popularization, to the later years of political and anti-war movements,
the entire musical uses songs by The Beatles, (whom were also famous in the 60′s) although this was strangely not indicated anywhere on the movie poster.
Even the names of the characters in the movie were inspired by their song titles and lyrics
ie. main character = Jude, from Hey Jude obviously.
Early in the movie when the name “Jude” was first revealed, I turned to Rhys, whom had watched the movie before. “I bet they will sing Hey Jude later in the movie right.”
“Yes of course.”
And a lot of the scenes were allusions and references to The Beatles songs or actual events relating to The Beatles!
Which of course wouldn’t be apparent to non-hardcore fans like me, and most of us in the recent generations, but still! Super amusing!
After the movie I went back home and googled up some interesting trivia, ha ha I’m such a nerd
(I also read in there the reason why The Beatles wasn’t mentioned on the movie poster, but i forgot. heh.)
More plus points to the movie?
I didn’t know Jim Sturgess, more famously known as the main character on 21, could sing! Quite well, in fact
And cameo appearances by Bono and Salma Hayek! (There are more famous people in the show but I don’t know them, heh)
Salma Hayek plays a sexy nurse in one of the songs, boys will likeee
see if you can spot her, hehe.
Andandand, (boy, the positive ramblings never seem to end with this one
)
And they made a few new interesting versions of The Beatles’ classic songs, which was quite refreshing!
My favourites, which means you must go download, are:
T.V. Carpio – I Want To Hold Your Hand (slower emotionally-distressed version of the original)
Carol Woods, Timothy T. Mitchum – Let It Be (gospel version. amazing.)
Jim Sturgess – All My Loving
Joe Anderson – Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Bono – Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (LSD)
Bono – I Am The Walrus (coo coo ca choo!)
(ok, all Bono songs are favourites possibly because I’m a bit biased. I love U2 sigh sigh)
:+:+:
Mamma Mia! was one movie I was really looking forward to, for 2 main reasons
1. It was being overhyped gila babi sial, everybody was talking about it, about how great it is,
2. ABBA songs were used!
And every time i think of ABBA, i go back to my childhood days where mini Thiathia and minier sisterDebbie used to jump on the bed and sing and dance to ABBA songs, which were my mom’s favourite band back in the good ol days
sigh sigh memorieeess
So it was a major must to watch this movie with my mom and sis again
hee.
But to me, it was a bit of a disappointment la. Possibly because I expected so much from it too.
And I also wasn’t feeling well that day, so I didn’t break into song and dance in the middle of the cinema (as per initially planned)
Good points of the movie,
there was some serious happy pappy the-whole-village-sings-and-dances-with-you vibes all throughout the movie, such a feel good movie la.
Across The Universe was more of a whimsical trippy melancholic vibe. Which I could appreciate more, somehow.
And Meryl Streep is still the amazing actress she is :)
and how often do you get to see Pierce Brosnan sing?
Bad points of the movie, the one that will haunt me for the rest of my life,
PIERCE BROSNAN SINGING.
JAMES BOND SINGING.
GAAAH. CANNOT. SALAH. MAKE IT STOP. MAKE IT STOPPP.
Now I have the comical image of a very calm sexy suave James Bond breaking his cool and screaming out funny romantics at the top of his lungs.
I cringe whenever he starts to sing, and I turn to Debbie and we both start laughing miserably :p
IMHO, i do think musical films should be performed by the more experienced artists off Broadway, who can actually do all 3 – sing, dance and act.
And not so much by the Hollywood mega stars. They have big names to sell the show, but more often than not, the singing leaves much to be desired.
But other than that, it was still a good movie to watch all in all
You can never go wrong with musicals!
I found myself humming and tapping my feet to the ABBA songs even after the movie was over
Dancing queeeeeeeen…
:+:+:
Other musicals I’m dying to watch, some time soon.
Because I know most of the songs already, and I don’t even know the story.
Because HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL ROCKS and you know it!
Don’t try and deny it!

Currently listening to: Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova – Falling Slowly
